Questo è un progetto a cui sono molto legato, una architettura per la mia città, un segnale per i cittadini, un regalo ai bambini ed al futuro e alla finfine a mia figlia nata di lì a poco.

Explora, il Museo dei Bambini è un’altra bella storia iniziata con una giovane mamma imprenditrice di ritorno dall’Inghilterra dove aveva visitato Eureka il ‘children museum’ di Halifax.

Facciamolo qui a Roma!

Era il 1993 e stavamo per avere il primo sindaco della Capitale eletto direttamente dai cittadini, vi era fermento di cambiamento e grandi speranze e aspettative. In effetti il neo sindaco chiedeva partecipazione, idee e progetti e la nostra idea fu ben accolta. Si trattava di trovare uno spazio adatto a realizzarla da darci in affitto ed al resto ci avremmo pensato noi. Detta così può sembrare semplice, ma non fu così: per 3 anni girammo da un posto ad un altro facendo progetti preliminari per verificare la fattibilità, il Comune non sapeva cosa fosse di sua proprietà e cosa no. Poi nel 1996 sembrò essere arrivati al capolinea e a dicembre ci fu la conferenza stampa che annunciava la realizzazione all’interno dello Zoo di villa Borghese, era un bel progetto dove lo spazio si sviluppava sotto una grande serra che recuperava l’idea dello spazio aperto con gli alberi e le costruzioni caratteristiche dei vecchi ricoveri degli animali che venivano integrati nella nuova architettura. Non passarono 20 minuti dalla fine della conferenza stampa che il Comune ci comunicò che non sarebbe stato possibile realizzarlo lì e che ci avrebbero trovato in 30 giorni la destinazione definitiva. In effetti un mese dopo ci assegnarono l’ex area ATAC al Borghetto Flaminio, un fantastico complesso stratificatosi nei secoli a partire dal 1870 con una pensilina centrale a capriate Polonceau poggiata su pilastrini in ghisa con tanto di capitelli ionici. Un posto bellissimo a 200mt da Piazza del Popolo, al centro di Roma.

In effetti è lì che la cosa si è avviata grazie al contributo essenziale dell’allora responsabile dell’ufficio per il Centro Storico del Comune che ha spianato la strada dagli ostacoli burocratici che via via si incontravano ed alla capacità e determinazione di quella mamma che organizzatasi in cooperativa femminile è riuscita a trovare gli sponsor e i finanziamenti necessari.

Nel 1997 abbiamo avviato il progetto a cui sono seguiti i lavori terminati nel 2001 con l’inaugurazione.

Sette anni di studi, viaggi, incontri e scontri bellissimi, le esigenze di progettazione mi hanno portato a realizzare un pool di architetti ed ingegneri esperti in diverse discipline, assieme ad altri ho partecipato anche a Thermie un progetto europeo con il quale fu finanziato il più grande impianto integrato in architettura dell’epoca nel centro Italia sul tetto del museo. Nel ’99 iniziati i lavori con un’impresa di due fratelli molto coraggiosi, ho cominciato invece una collaborazione con il dipartimento di psicopedagogia infantile del CNR per la definizione del progetto scientifico preliminare alla definizione delle attività e nel 2000 assieme a mia moglie infine abbiamo avviato il progetto Artisti per il Museo dei Bambini che ha visto la partecipazione di 10 artisti italiani alla realizzazione di diversi exhibit.

Un viaggio umano e professionale intenso e gratificante che ha portato alla realizzazione del primo Museo dei Bambini italiano, finito il quale non ho potuto far altro che dedicarmi con mia moglie alla nascita di mia figlia a cui tutto il nostro sforzo era evidentemente dedicato già da prima!

 

 

Explora, the Children Museum is another beautiful story. Everything has begun the day a young entrepreneur and mother that coming back from England where in Halifax she went to visit Eureka the local Children Museum.

Let’s do it here in Rome she said to me!

It was 1993 and we were almost there to have our first mayor elected directly from the people, there was a ferment of change and great hope and expectations. The new mayor actually asked for participation, new ideas and projects and our idea had been well received. It was to find a place where realize it to give us for hire, all the rest was up to us. Sounds easy, but it hasn’t been so: along three years we went around from a venue to another making preliminary feasibility projects, the municipality didn’t know what was in their property and what wasn’t. Finally in December 1996 we had a press conference with the mayor to announce the Museum in the villa Borghese Zoo. It was a beautiful project in which the space was developed under a big greenhouse to preserve the open space feeling with trees and the typical animal’s shelters constructions we integrated in the new architecture. Not more than twenty minutes later the end of the press conference the municipality told us the place couldn’t be that one, they said they should have found a new one in thirty days. One month later punctually they gave us an old industrial area of the local transportation company in the Borghetto Flaminio, a wonderful venue stratified through the centuries. It was a Polenceau roof shelter on cast iron column with ionic capitals from 1870, rising in the middle of a court-yard surrounded by several brick industrial buildings. And all that was 200 mt away from Piazza del Popolo, the historical square in the center of Rome, designed by Valadier and its Monumental door by Michelangelo, Bernini and others!

Eventually is there the thing started, thanks to the architect that at the time was responsible of the Municipality of the city center, that has paved the way from the bureaucratic obstacles we found along the way, and thanks to the determination and strength of that mom that in cooperation with other women has found the sponsor and the money to realize the project.

We started the project in 1997 and we opened in 2001. Seven years of studying, travelling, meeting and beautiful clashes. I leaded a pool of architects, engineers and experts of several different disciplines, we apply to the Thermie European program and we got the money to build the largest PV architecture integrated system in central Italy, on the museum roof. In 1999, once the works were begun, I started to collaborate with the Infantile Psycopedagogy Dept of CNR to define the scientific project at the base of the exhibits project and in 2000 with my wife we gathered 10 Italian young artists, around the Artists for the Children Museum project, to invent several exhibits.

A human and professional trip, intense and satisfying, to the first all Italian Children Museum at the end of which I only wanted to pass time with my wife and our new born baby-girl, our effort was clearly dedicated from the beginning to!
